Sports Betting in the US

It’s amazing how popular sports betting has become over the past 20 years or so. Before then, if you wanted to place a wager in the United States, your only serious option was a trip to Nevada. The internet changed all that; customers across most of the US have enjoyed online betting at Bovada Sportsbook for quite some time now. Not only does Bovada offer the same sports and leagues (including NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college football, and basketball) as the bricks-and-mortar books, you can also bet on things you can’t find in Nevada or elsewhere – even politics and entertainment are on the list. Here’s what makes sports betting online tick, and how to become part of the scene.

Online Sports Betting: What You Need to Know

Thanks to the rise of NFL betting – still the most popular way to bet on sports in the United States – most people are at least somewhat familiar with the point spread. But there are many different ways to bet on sports. Here’s a quick introduction to the options available to you at Bovada Sportsbook, whether you’re betting at home or on the go using your mobile device.

Spread: Two teams compete in a match, and the favorite has to win by a certain number of points/goals to cover the spread and cash in. For example, the New England Patriots were 4.5-point favorites at Super Bowl LII versus the Philadelphia Eagles; that means New England had to win by at least five points to cover the spread, while the Eagles could have lost by up to four points.

Moneyline: Take away the spread, and bet on which team will win the game straight up. The Eagles were +165 underdogs at Super Bowl LII, so when they beat New England 41-33, they paid out $165 for every $100 wagered.

Total: Instead of betting on which team will win, you can bet on whether their combined final score will go Over or Under the posted total. At Super Bowl LII, the total was 49, so anyone who bet the Over got paid.

Props: Proposition bets ask you to wager on things other than the outcome of the game itself, like whether one of the quarterbacks will throw for 400 yards or more; Yes was the right call at +300 when Tom Brady threw for 505 yards at Super Bowl LII.

Parlays: Combine anywhere between two and 12 bets on the same parlay card, and if all your picks come true, you get paid exponentially higher – it’s the ultimate “let it ride” option for sports betting.

Futures: Bet on the outcome of an event that will be resolved further down the road, like who will win the next Super Bowl.

Live Betting: Once a game is in progress, you can continue to place your wagers by visiting the Live Betting page at Bovada Sportsbook. Odds are updated in real time with every play, so you can follow along at home and get maximum enjoyment out of your betting experience.
