McIlroy listed as co-favorite
All but two of the world’s top-ranked 64 golfers will tee it up beginning Wednesday hoping to contend for five days and six matches at the first WGC event of the 2012 golf betting season at the Jack Nicklaus-designed course that is cut into the Sonaran Desert at Dove Mountain.
Only the vacationing Phil Mickelson and the injured Paul Casey will be missing from the field of eligible competitors this week, with George Coatzee and Ernie Els (both of South Africa) taking their respective places in the annual single-elimination tournament that features head-to-head competition in match play.
Woods, the co-favorite at 11/1 odds to win the event along with Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, will play his first match against No. 46 Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano of Spain on Wednesday.
There are four brackets overall featuring 16 golfers in each bracket, with defending WGC-Accenture champion and current world No. 1 Luke Donald of England listed as the top seed overall and favored to emerge from the Bobby Jones bracket.
Donald, who is at 14/1 odds to repeat as the overall winner when the final round is completed on Sunday afternoon, will tee it up against Els (100/1) in his first matchup on Wednesday.
McIlroy (11/1 odds) headlines the Gary Player bracket and will square off against Coetzee (100/1) in his opening match.
Kaymer fell just short
Joining Woods in the San Snead bracket is world No. 3 Lee Westwood of England, who will be looking to make his mark in this event after struggling in most of his previous World Golf Championships appearances. Westwood (18/1 odds) will play his first match against No. 62 Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium (80/1).
Martin Kaymer of Germany is the other top seed, as the No. 4-ranked golfer in the world heads up the Ben Hogan bracket. Kaymer, who will face No. 61 Greg Chalmers (150/1 odds) of Australia in his first match, finished as the runner-up to Donald at this event last year and is listed at 22/1 odds to finish the job this time around.
Sergio Garcia of Spain is listed ahead of Kaymer at 20/1 odds to win the WGC-Accenture and will open against veteran compatriot Miguel Angel Jimenez (150/1) in the Player bracket.
Bet on the bracket
Some of the other intriguing opening-day matches at Dove Mountain featuring top contenders on the golf betting futures include Dustin Johnson (28/1) against Jim Furyk (66/1) in the Jones bracket, Webb Simpson (28/1) taking on Matteo Manassero (100/1) of Italy in the Snead bracket, and Steve Stricker (28/1) versus Kevin Na (125/1) in the Hogan bracket.
You can also bet on which bracket the eventual winner will come from, with the Player bracket (+225 odds) the favorite, followed by the Snead (+250), the Jones (+275) and then the Hogan (+300) as the underdog.
